Why Materials Matter

When it comes to intimate products, what they're made of matters more than almost anything else. The skin in and around your intimate areas is highly absorbent and sensitive — far more so than the skin on your hands or arms. That means the materials in the products you use can have a direct impact on your health and comfort.

Body-Safe Materials: What They Are

Medical-Grade Silicone

Non-porous, hypoallergenic, and easy to clean, medical-grade silicone is one of the gold standards for intimate products. It doesn't harbour bacteria, doesn't degrade over time, and is free from harmful chemicals. Look for products that specify "body-safe" or "medical-grade" silicone — not just "silicone," which can be a vague term.

Stainless Steel and Borosilicate Glass

Both are non-porous, incredibly durable, and completely body-safe when manufactured to the right standards. They're also easy to sterilise. High-quality stainless steel and borosilicate glass products are built to last and are an excellent investment.

ABS Plastic

Hard ABS plastic is body-safe and commonly used in the outer casings of electronic intimate products. It's non-porous and easy to clean, making it a reliable choice when used correctly.

What to Avoid

Some materials commonly found in cheaper intimate products can be harmful. These include:

• Jelly rubber and PVC — often contain phthalates, which are chemical plasticisers linked to health concerns. These materials are also porous, meaning they can harbour bacteria even after cleaning.
• Latex — can cause allergic reactions in many people. If you're unsure about latex sensitivity, opt for latex-free alternatives.
• Vague "skin-safe" claims — without specific material disclosure, these claims are meaningless. Always look for clear material information.

How to Care for Your Products

Even the best materials require proper care. Always clean your products before and after use with a dedicated intimate product cleaner or mild, unscented soap and warm water. Non-motorised silicone, glass, and stainless steel products can be sterilised by boiling or using a diluted bleach solution.

Store your products in a clean, dry place — ideally in a dedicated pouch or case to protect them from dust and contact with other materials.
